I reflected on Ida's movements and the financial side of her business, because it was, of course a business, first and foremost. This was no calling. Ida-Aveline was a busy woman, and I couldn't see her going back to whatever job had earned her the ruddiness of her hands. Who would? She had recently conducted a national tour, I knew that much, and I recalled someone telling me that the last leg of it I could quite easily have found a seat. Was her star beginning to dim? Were we approaching an age of enlightenment?

Ever since the war, the world of spirits and astral communication had done rather well. One couldn't cross the road without stumbling upon a spiritualist church. Séances were big business, but were they losing their lustre?
